The Council has fostered the communication of information on the importance of diet, physical activity and weight control in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Consumers will benefit from a better understanding of the importance of reducing calorie and fat intake and increasing caloric expenditure as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.
Based on a thorough review of the scientific evidence, the Council supports the availability of FDA-approved low-calorie sweeteners (i.e., acesulfame potassium, aspartame, neotame, saccharin and sucralose), fat replacers and other low-calorie ingredients, including polyols. The Council also supports the approval of alitame, and reapproval of cyclamate.
The approval of additional safe low-calorie sweeteners, fat replacers and other dietary ingredients for those wanting or needing them is encouraged. The public will be served best by a variety of low-calorie ingredients, with each allowed to find its most effective role in the marketplace. |
