Science-informed resources for effective, responsible public policy

State policymakers are playing an important role in shaping food and nutrition policy. The Calorie Control Council works with state legislators, agency leaders, and policy staff to provide clear, credible, and timely information on sugar-reduction ingredients including sweeteners, dietary fibers, and related public policy issues.

Our goal is to help policymakers evaluate proposals with the scientific, regulatory, and practical context needed to protect consumers, support informed choice, and advance effective policy outcomes.

Supporting Science-Based State Policy

CCC is one of the founding members of the Food Ingredient Safety Coalition (FISC), a coalition dedicated to advancing science-based food ingredient policy. Through FISC, CCC monitors the potential impact of state bills on low- and no-calorie ingredients and evaluates potential impacts on consumers, public health, food innovation and regulatory consistency.

Who we watch out for:

Our primary attention centers around policies that could affect individuals who rely on these ingredients, including adults and children managing diabetes, reducing added sugar intake or trying to control their weight.

State Policy Resources

CCC provides state legislative offices seeking balanced, science-informed information on sugar-reduction policy. Practical resources include:

Advancing policies that help people make informed dietary choices while preserving access to reduced-sugar and reduced-calorie options.

Public Health Context

Providing policymakers with practical information on how sugar-reduction ingredients can support efforts to reduce added sugars, expand healthier options, and promote balanced eating patterns.

Regulatory Consistency

Encouraging policy approaches that align with federal safety reviews, global regulatory experience, and practical implementation considerations for manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.

Constructive Engagement

Serving as a responsive partner throughout the legislative process by providing scientific expertise, regulatory context and key stakeholder perspectives.

For Legislators and Staff

State policy decisions often involve complex questions related to food safety, nutrition, consumer labeling, chronic disease prevention, affordability, and implementation.

The Calorie Control Council provides objective, science-informed context to help policymakers understand how proposed legislation may affect consumers, public health goals, food and beverage innovation, and the broader marketplace.

How we can help:

Our approach is collaborative, transparent, and solutions oriented. We welcome opportunities to brief legislative offices, respond to technical questions, provide scientific and regulatory background, share stakeholder perspectives, and work toward policy outcomes that are evidence-based, practical, and aligned with consumer well-being.
