Soccer Fans Could Gain Up to Five Pounds During World Cup

Some research suggests soccer fanatics will put on an average of almost five pounds during the month-long 2010 World Cup tournament. Research conducted by Men’s Health magazine found that during each game, a fan will drink four cans of beer, eat three slices of pizza, half a bag of chips and half a tub of dip, which is the equivalent of 1,913 calories. Another study predicts that fans will spend approximately 38 hours tuned into the event, consuming an average of 20,180 calories – or the equivalent of 72 Mars bars, 37 Big Macs or nearly 14 pounds of cheddar cheese. Separate research by the internet shopping service Ocado suggests the British will be downing huge quantities of food and beer in front of the games. During the last World Cup, statistics showed a 78 percent increase in tortilla chip sales and a 116 percent rise on dip sales. Lager sales rose by 53 percent and champagne went up by 23 percent.  Sales of barbecue food and equipment? Those soared by a staggering 272 percent. Ocado calculates that the average person will consume an extra 340 calories per World Cup match, leading to a weight gain of four to five pounds over the course of the tournament.
