Sorbitol

Sorbitol

Sorbitol is a low-calorie bulk sweetener used in a wide range of food, beverage, ‎pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products. In addition to whole foods, sorbitol is commercially produced to help reduce calories from sugars in baked goods, chocolates, frozen desserts, hard candies, sugar-free chewing gum and snack bars. It provides about 60% of the sweetness of sugar with ‎fewer calories and offers a smooth, cooling taste. In addition to sweetness, sorbitol helps ‎maintain moisture and improve texture, making it useful in sugar-free and reduced-calorie ‎formulations. ‎

Benefits of Sorbitol

Sorbitol is not metabolized by oral bacteria that cause tooth decay, making it non-cariogenic and suitable for tooth-friendly products. The usefulness of polyols, including sorbitol, has been recognized by the American Dental Association.

Sorbitol is slowly absorbed, resulting in a lower impact on blood glucose and insulin levels compared to sugar

With about 2.6 calories per gram (compared to 4 for sugar), sorbitol can help support reduced-calorie and “light” products
