The Calorie Control Council, established in 1966, is an international association representing the low- and reduced-calorie food and beverage industry. Today it represents manufacturers and suppliers of low- and reduced-calorie foods and beverages, including manufacturers and suppliers of more than two dozen different alternative sweeteners, fibers and other low-calorie, dietary ingredients. Council staff includes experts certified in public health, food and nutrition.

The Council provides a forum for its members to discuss and resolve issues and ensure excellent cooperation among key internal and external stakeholders internationally. The Council promotes open dialogue between its members and scientific and governmental organizations, health professionals, consumers groups—on topics related to the safe use and benefits of low- and reduced-calorie ingredients and products. As part of this objective, careful attention to scientific research has been a cornerstone of the Council since its founding. From time to time, the Council has sponsored studies on low- and reduced-calorie ingredients, foods and beverages—including ingredient safety, consumer usage and public opinion.

The Council has fostered the communication of information on the importance of diet, physical activity and weight control in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Council believes that consumers will benefit from a better understanding of the importance of reducing calorie intake and increasing caloric expenditure as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. The Council’s motto is “healthy eating and exercise for life”®!

Based on thorough reviews of the scientific evidence, the Council supports the use and continued availability of acesulfame potassium, aspartame, neotame, saccharin, stevia sweeteners, sucralose, monk fruit, advantame, cyclamate, and polyols. The Council also supports the continued availability of currently approved dietary fibers and encourages the approval of additional safe low-calorie sweeteners, dietary fibers, and other dietary ingredients for those wanting or needing them. The Council and its member companies support the availability of a wide variety of safe low- and reduced-calorie ingredients. The public is best served by having a variety of low- and reduced-calorie ingredients, to allow for greater variety in the diet for those choosing such products.
