Maltitol is better tolerated than previously reported, and be used as a sugar replacer in a wide range of food products – according to recent research. The study, recently published in theInternational Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, suggests maltitol can be considered well tolerated by children at up to 15 g/day and could be used to create new sugar-free confectionery and food products. The study reports on small statistical differences in digestive comfort between maltitol and sucrose control. A polyol, maltitol is a reduced calorie bulk sweetener with sugar-like taste and sweetness. Its stability, high sweetness, and structure make it suitable for a variety of reduced-calorie, reduced fat and sugar-free foods.
